Blooming seating is a playful piece of urban furniture when the petals are down, featuring woven hammocks and benches. When the petals are raised, the work becomes a vibrant public sculpture. At night, Blooming Seating is lit from within to create a glowing beacon that invites folks into Granville Mall. The project brings new life and energy to its historical context. The design reflects our engagement with local community members and business owners, who asked for more comfortable + colourful places to sit outside and socialize.

This project received the Halifax Urban Design Award of Excellence in 2025 in the Urban Elements category. Thank you to the jury for your kind comments: "The project was felt to be very playful. It was a receptacle for memory and storytelling. As an interactive piece, it attracts users to engage with the public realm in new ways.”
