A pollinator garden that brings colour, insects, and neighbours into an overlooked corner.
Location:
Novalea Drive, Kjipuktuk (Halifax), NS
Partner:
Alliance Française Halifax
The vision for this project is to design and build a pollinator garden with gathering + learning spaces in an underutilized green space next to the Alliance Française. The project will create an open and welcoming community space that promotes cross cultural exchanges, learning, active living, and sustainability. The community pollinator garden will engage people in growing + learning about plants that diversify and strengthen our urban ecosystem.
The first piece of the vision is a curved bench with integrated planter boxes and a little library. This element was a shared idea that emerged from the engagement sessions with youth, AF staff, and community members. The placement of the bench prioritizes accessibility from the sidewalk and the desire to sit facing either inward or outward. The choice of red cedar aligns with the values of prioritizing natural materials that do not require chemical treatments. The engraved wood pieces from the youth build day make up the top of the bench seat, with many more blank spaces for engraving during future community events.
