Project Description

On a beautiful plot situated on Kearny Lake Rd, we sought to find a creative solution to an increasingly challenging problem. A neighboring property was creating looming new structures which was putting the natural and peaceful backyard space in jeopardy.

The site is too rocky and inclined with beautiful old hemlock trees for a traditional fence to be an option. Working with Carol-Anne and Fred our team set out to develop a creative solution that would uphold a sense of privacy when it was needed most - the warmer shoulder seasons and summer months. Our Suggestion was to use the landscape to our advantage and create a temporary tensile structure that could get seasonally installed and removed.

In partnership with weaver and artist Sal McKinnell we developed a wool garden screen that worked in harmony with the mature hemlocks lining the property edge. Panels were woven out of natural wool fibers on a loom and then stitched together to create the three large panels. Once installed between the hemlock trees, each panel was embroidered with a pattern that complimented the landscape.

This approach ensured that the screen was able to provide the necessary privacy while still allowing for natural light to filter through. The woven design accomplished this goal by providing a semi-transparent barrier that allowed light to filter through while still blocking the view from the adjacent property.

The result provided the clients with a natural and beautiful privacy screen that added both functionalities and blended in with their stunning gardens. The use of weaving techniques and natural materials helped to create a unique and sustainable solution. We are all excited to see how the wool ages through time as this type of long-term exterior installation is not something we had seen.
