2025

A student-led design process where the need for an indigenous student space became an opportunity for learning.

Location:

Fall River, NS

Partner:

Halifax Regional Municipality Parks and Recreation, Lockview High School

Project Description

In the Spring of 2025, students from Lockview High School enrolled in a 6-week paid after-school program where they learnt skills in architectural design with the OSO team along with teachings in Mi’kmaw culture from Indigenous knowledge holders. Their project was to exercise what they learnt to co-create an Indigenous student space for their school and community.

The structure is situated near the school to help ensure safety, visibility and connection to existing learning spaces. The circular structure is characterized by a ring of 7 supporting posts: one for each of the 7 sacred teachings. At the heart a ceremonial fire pit is embedded into an eight-pointed star ground mural. While the surrounding bench anchors the structure to the site, the woven roof is light and airy. The opening to the East lends itself to ceremony, while the embedded symbology and stories are tools for teaching and learning. The entire project is built from natural and durable materials including local hemlock and stone. These core design decisions came directly from students.
