Project Description

The FreeLab was a unique opportunity for Dalhousie Architecture students to explore the form, topology, materiality, and mechanical function of wind instruments. Design ideas emerged from workshops in collaboration with students and faculty from the Dalhousie Wind Ensemble and the School of Architecture. Through experimental design methods and tools like rapid prototyping, photogrammetry, and 3D modelling, students gained an interdisciplinary and expanded understanding of acoustics. The resulting wooden relief sculpture was showcased in an exhibition in November 2021 as the backdrop to a musical performance.
