The Mobile Makerspace project aims to expand access to STEAM education and land-based learning opportunities for Indigenous youth + communities across Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqiyik Territory (Nova Scotia and New Brunswick). We designed and delivered an in-depth participatory design process that engaged hundreds of youth of all ages. The reciprocal participatory process allowed us to glean valuable information that shaped the design, while delivering engagement in the form of design education and skill-building, employment opportunities, creative activities, and exciting introductions to STEAM tools.
The project reimagines STEAM education as a mobile, land-based, and community-rooted resource. Informed by extensive engagement with Indigenous youth, the makerspaces reflect their ideas and needs, enabling programming to reach rural areas and foster collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.
