Participatory design processes can take many shapes. This one created 6 weeks of free programming for seniors. As reciprocal engagement and design research, we hosted weekly interior design course for folks at Spencer House. From drawing, to collage, to model-building, we explored many methods and tools for architectural and interior design. The course project was to reimagine the interior spaces of the Spencer House Centre.

We took those community ideas and wove them together with staff needs, efficiency improvements, and accessibility upgrades to create a warm + bright design vision. The renovated space will feature homey + nature-inspired decor, open accessible spaces free from obstacles, partitions for program flexibility, and lots of built-in storage. Most importantly, the design reflects the knowledge, experience, and ideas of those who know the space best: Spencer House community designers.
