Project Description

WEave was an ephemeral participatory installation and placemaking project created during our artist residency with Sappyfest 19 and Struts Gallery. The wooden frames were pre-fabricated at our studio in Halifax and assembled on site. During SappyFest weekend, the installation was alive with participation. Folks were invited to jump in and help fill the weft with strands of colourful fishing rope in any way they liked. While some stuck to a classic basket weave, others invented their own weaving moves + methods. We were continually delighted and surprised to see the installation accumulate moments of exploration and experimentation as it evolved over the weekend.

The result was a playful and immersive space for folks to rest, recharge, create, and enjoy the music from afar.  At night, the installation was lit to create giant lanterns. Folks wandering from the Sappy main stage to the Legion passed by the glowing installation, often stopping to weave a few strands of talk for a while in the hammocks. From our nearby apartment, we could hear people activating the space until late into the night. WEave offered a place to gather with new + old friends while listening to the music drifting over from the festival.
